My mother rubs pigments used in Hindu rituals across my skin as she follows, reinterprets, or ignores my instructions. Clear distinctions between us dissolve–whose body is at stake? who holds authorship? who reveals–as we negotiate and soften into the limits of our collaboration.
She stumbles over my words, which become her words. A love letter, becomes a love letter to her, which becomes her love letter to me.
